Juan Martin del Potro and Novak Djokovic recently participated in "The Last Challenge" exhibition match, as the former bid goodbye to his tennis career. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions for fans and players alike, and after it, former World No.3 Marin Cilic congratulated the Argentinian on his career, while praising the Serb for being a part of the match.
While del Potro played his last tournament in 2022, the Argentinian recently faced off against Novak Djokovic. In an exhibition match played in Buenos Aires on December 2, he beat the Serb 6-4, 7-5 in an emotional outing.
Sometime after the match, former US Open champion Marin Cilic took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate del Potro on his career, while acknowledging his Serbian opponent partaking in the match. He wrote,
“Dear Juan Martin, so many farewells this year, and while they are bittersweet for us tennis enthusiasts, they are also a celebration of all that you guys have achieved. I’m truly happy that you had the farewell you deserve, at home, alongside Novak Djokovic who showed his own greatness by honoring and celebrating this moment with you. It’s a testament to the admiration and respect you’ve earned from your peers and fans alike.”
Del Potro had an impressive career, winning the 2009 US Open after beating Roger Federer in the summit clash. However, the 36-year-old's time in the sport was plagued by injuries, with his struggles amplified after he fractured his knee in 2019.
Juan Martin del Potro extends his gratitude to Novak Djokovic
While Marin Cilic was touched by Novak Djokovic joining Juan Martin del Potro for the latter's farewell match, the Argentinian also thanked Djokovic after the match. He penned a lengthy note to the Serb, extending his gratitude.
Del Potro thanked the 37-year-old and his team for taking time out of their schedule to make his dream farewell come true. He went on to say that Djokovic's presence made the event "transcend tennis," writing,
"Dear Nole, your presence not only made this event unforgettable for me and my family but it transcended tennis. A whole country could enjoy and get excited with you, and it became clear that you are not only the greatest in sport history, but also in life.
“Argentina loves you, and we are eternally grateful for the show, the generosity and the delivery you gave to make this day perfect. I feel like something very special was born out of all of this: a sincere friendship that will last forever. I love you so much my friend,” he added.
Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro met 20 times on the main Tour. Djokovic won 16 of these encounters, including their riveting clash at the 2018 US Open final.
