Novak Djokovic unfollowed controversial and self-proclaimed 'misogynist' influencer Andrew Tate after an uproar amongst the tennis fraternity. The Serb is currently in the French capital for the Paris Olympics 2024, bidding for his maiden gold medal.
The World No. 2 was involved in a controversy as an X user brought to attention that Djokovic followed the American-British influencer who has garnered fame for his controversial take on women and their role in society. He has also been embroiled in a slew of criminal cases including allegations of sexual aggression, human trafficking, and rape, and had to face arrest in 2022.
The controversy was amplified when a noted journalist Ben Rothenberg gave his opinion on the Serb following Tate.
"Novak Djokovic, GOAT of tennis and GOAT of unforced errors," Ben Rothenberg wrote on X.
Many fans came down hard on the 24-time Grand Slam champion, pointing out that the two share similar views on vaccines (Andrew Tate later changed his tune on the vaccination issue).
After a massive uproar on social media, the Serb has unfollowed the controversial figure.
Novak Djokovic continues campaign at Paris Olympics 2024
Novak Djokovic has so far enjoyed success at the 2024 Paris Olympics as he eyes an elusive gold medal. He made a thumping start against Matthew Ebden in the first round, winning 6-0, 6-1.
In the second round, the Serb faced long-time arch-rival Rafael Nadal for their 60th career battle. The World No. 2 dominated in the first set to win 6-1 and was off to a flying start in the second set as he won four straight games but Nadal broke back twice to level the set. The 24-time Grand Slam champion broke in the ninth game and held his serve in the tenth to win the second set 6-4.
After the match, the Serb spoke to Eurosport about the mini-comeback by Nadal in the second set. He said players can't give any chances to the Spaniard, especially on clay courts with the crowd being involved.
"I'm very relieved because everything seemed to be going my way at 6-1 and 4-0, maybe I felt too comfortable at that moment. At 4-1 I played a regular serve. You can't give Nadal any chances because he'll take them, he'll get back into the match, especially on this court with the crowd involved," he told Eurosport.
Novak Djokovic will now face Dominik Koepfer in the third round at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
