Novak Djokovic has won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics' men's singles tennis event after defeating Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the final. The prestigious medal eluded him for over a decade before he could finally wear it around his neck.
In his post-match interview, the Serb expressed a desire to compete at the next Games but fans feel it is unlikely.
Paris 2024 was Djokovic's fifth Olympic appearance. He has previously reached three semifinals but lost in all of them. His best finish at the Games before winning in the French capital was a bronze medal from his debut Olympic appearance at Beijing 2008.
In his fourth Olympic semifinal, Djokovic faced Italy's Lorenzo Musetti and defeated him to advance to his first singles gold medal match against Alcaraz just weeks after the youngster got the better of the 24-time Grand Slam winner in the Wimbledon final. However, the 37-year-old was not to be denied again. Both competitors failed to convert multiple break points but Djokovic was clinical in the tiebreaker, winning both sets and the gold medal 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
After he expressed a desire to represent Serbia at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 when he will be 41, Djokovic's comments were posted on X by a tennis-related account.
However, fans feel that the Serb's wish is "unlikely" to come true.
"And I want to date Eugenie Bouchard but it's looking unlikely," one said.
"If he actually competes in this I’m tempted to cut my ties completely to this sport," another said.
"This vulture is shameless... You have a family & kids bozo," a third fan said.
Here are some more reactions to Djokovic's comments.
"Old man please rest and leave us alone," a fan said.
"ENOUGH," another said.
"I really hope he doesn’t do this, it’s okay to stop. Enjoy your life sir, be a spectator. Be a legend," yet another fan said.
Novak Djokovic felt 'over the moon' upon winning gold medal for Serbia at Paris Olympics

After four failed attempts at winning the gold medal for his country, Novak Djokovic succeeded and felt "over the moon." He told reporters after the match:
"I'm just over the moon... Being on that court with [the] Serbian flag raising and singing [the] Serbian anthem and wearing the gold [medal] around my neck, I think nothing can beat that in terms of professional sport."
The Serb has become the fifth person to win the Career Golden Slam (winning all four Majors and the Olympic gold medal) after Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.
