Novak Djokovic recently agreed with Elon Musk after the world's richest man endorsed the Serb's reasoning behind his decision to skip his post-match interview following his fourth-round win at the 2025 Australian Open. However, several tennis fans did not take kindly to Djokovic echoing Musk's sentiments.
On Sunday, January 19, the Serb posted a video on X (formerly Twitter). In the video, the former World No. 1 explained that he skipped the post-match interview due to what he perceived as disrespect for him and Serbian fans from prominent journalist Tony Jones a couple of days before. The journalist works for the same media company that is in charge of conducting the post-match interviews at the 2025 Australian Open, Channel Nine.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, took note of the 24-time Major winner's post and reacted to it, writing:
"It’s way better just to talk to the public directly than go through the negativity filter of legacy media"
Subsequently, Novak Djokovic wrote in agreement with Musk:
"Indeed"
Many fans criticized the current World No. 7 for agreeing with Musk's take. Some of these fans aired their dislike for the world's richest man over his political influence and also the changes he has made to X since taking over the platform when it was named Twitter.
"Good f**king lord I’m totally on his side for this s**t and he goes ahead and ruins by interacting with this moron," a fan wrote.
"Nah bro how can you get mad at a man for mocking some Serbian fans but give credit to a man that is mocking us all and turning this app into the most toxic place ever," commented another.
"Endorsing fascists, easy as that," another chimed in, seemingly referring to Musk's close ties with US President Donald Trump.
Here are some more reacts from fans critical of the Serb for agreeing with Musk:
"There's still time to delete this Novak I beg," wrote one fan.
"I agree with him for the first time and he does that," another added.
"Hey @andy_murray, can you please coach some sense into him?" questioned one, mentioning Djokovic's coach for the 2025 Australian Open, former rival Andy Murray.
Meanwhile, the under-fire journalist in question, Tony Jones, recently broke his silence on the controversy surrounding his remarks about the 24-time Grand Slam champion and Serbian fans.
Tony Jones says he rendered private apology to Novak Djokovic and his team
The raging interview controversy involving the former No. 1 at the 2025 Australian Open was kickstarted when journalist Tony Jones' attempt at humor resulted in comments that enraged the Serb and his loyal fanbase. During his press conference following his fourth-round win at the tournament, the Serb even claimed that neither Jones nor Channel Nine had apologized to him.
However, Jones was recently interviewed by Channel Nine on the controversy. The journalist said at one point during the interview:
"I was made aware on the Saturday morning from Tennis Australia via the Djokovic camp was not happy at all with those comments. Now, as such, I immediately contacted the Djokovic camp and issued an apology to them."
The Serb's next on-court challenge at the 2025 Australian Open would be to get past Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The winner of this match will face either second seed Alexander Zverev or 12th seed Tommy Paul in the semifinals.
