Tommy Paul faced a shocking 3-6, 5-7 loss to 36-year-old Adrian Mannarino in the first round of the ongoing 2024 Rolex Paris Masters. Paul, who recently won the Stockholm Open title, produced an erratic display, leading to his swift exit from the ATP Masters 1000 event. Unsurprisingly, several tennis fans voiced their frustrations at the American's performance.
After his title triumph in Stockholm, where he produced a fine performance in the final against Grigor Dimitrov, Tommy Paul's form seems to have dipped. The World No. 12 headed to Vienna for the Erste Bank Open, but his time in the Austrian capital was cut short by compatriot Brandon Nakashima, who got the better of Paul in the first round.
Next, Tommy Paul was in the French capital for the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters, his final opportunity of the season to muster a deep run to be in contention for the year-end Nitto ATP Finals. However, the American was poor with his serve and return against veteran Frenchman Mannarino.
Paul's last effort of the match pretty much summed up his performance, as he inexplicably tried to hit a between-the-legs trick shot. It failed to cross the net, resulting in a straight-set win for the aging Mannarino.
Fans lambasted Tommy Paul over his woeful display against Mannarino. Some poked fun at his influencer girlfriend, Paige Lorenze, as well. Lorenze came under scrutiny at the Queen's Club Championships earlier this year after she walked onto the court and posed with the ATP 500 trophy, which Paul had clinched.
"That’s gotta be one of the most embarrassing Tommy Paul losses I’ve ever seen," a fan wrote.
"So Tommy's girlfriend will not grab the (trophy emoji)," commented another.
"Paul is the new (Casper) Ruud," another chimed in, referring to three-time Major finalist and former World No. 2 Casper Ruud.
Another set of fans criticized Paul for the trick shot he attempted right at the end of the match.
"Tommy Paul trying to hit a between the leg trick shot while facing a match point in a atp 1000 should be at least a 6 month ban," wrote one fan.
"Trying to hit a tweener while standing in no-man’s land?! Tommy just complacent," another opined.
"Did we just watch Tommy sell that match? Wtf was that last shot? Between the legs? Really?" one fan questioned.
Despite his poor recent outing in Paris, overall, the 2024 season has seen Paul produce some of his best tennis.
Tommy Paul ends 2024 season with three ATP Tour-level titles
The Vienna Open and then the Rolex Paris Masters were both disappointing campaigns for Paul. However, it has otherwise been a stellar year for the 27-year-old, during which he has won three of his four ATP Tour-level titles.
Paul's first title triumph of the season came at the Dallas Open in February, where he defeated compatriot Marcos Giron in the final. At his next tournament, the Delray Beach Open, Paul reached the final but came up second-best to Taylor Fritz.
At the Queen's Club Championships, he defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the final. Paul also had a decent outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won the bronze medal in men's doubles partnering Fritz.
