Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios expressed his happiness after the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA title on Monday. The Celtics convincingly defeated the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 in the fifth match of the best-of-seven series and lifted the trophy.
The Dallas Mavericks avoided a full sweep with a 122-84 win over the latter on Friday, and desperately needed to win the fifth match to keep their hopes alive. However, with the valuable contributions from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the home team clinched the title after 16 long years.
Tatum gave an exceptional performance scoring 31 points in the match. Jaylen Brown, who averaged 20.8 points with 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists in the series was named as the Finals MVP. With this triumph, the Celtics clinched the most number of NBA titles (18) won by any team, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers.
Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios celebrated the Boston Celtics' triumph on his Instagram story. The Aussie shared two clips, one of which recalls the Celtics' 2008 NBA victory.
"One of the happiest moments of my life," Kyrgios wrote.
Kyrgios dedicated the other clip to Jayson Tatum, whose performance played a crucial role in the triumph. Tatum can be seen rejoicing by holding the trophy tightly in the video.
"Enjoy this moment bro @jaytatum0" Kyrgios wrote, tagging Tatum.
Nick Kyrgios spoke in defense of Jayson Tatum after recent wrong allegations
Nick Kyrgios showed his support for Jayson Tatum a few weeks ago when ESPN panelist Mike Greenberg accused Tatum of not joining Jaylen Brown's celebration after the latter won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP award.
The Aussie was left enraged at Greenberg who indicated that Tatum didn't join other players in the celebration though the basketballer was seen clapping and seemed joyful during the celebration.
"When Jaylen Brown wins that award and the moment that it happens, the rest of the team just goes crazy. They were all so genuinely excited for him. You did not seem to think that it was mirrored in Jayson Tatum," Greenberg had said to his co-panelists.
Following Greenberg's incorrect take, Nick Kyrgios expressed anger while defending Tatum on X. He wrote:
"Bro is literally smiling and clapping. You guys are terrible."
Jaylen Brown won the MVP title after the Boston Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers 105-102 in a close encounter on May 28. Brown was a key performer, scoring 29 points in the game, with Jayson Tatum contributing 26 points in the same match.
