Roger Federer's former coach Paul Annacone wished Bianca Andreescu a speedy recovery after the Canadian suffered what looked like a bad ankle injury during the Miami Open.
Andreescu did well to reach the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament where she was up against Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Russian won the opening set via a tiebreak but the Canadian broke her early in the second set and led 2-0 before suffering a nasty fall. She screamed in pain and eventually left the court in tears in a wheelchair.
Roger Federer's former coach Paul Annacone, who was part of the Tennis Channel's broadcast team, said that Andreescu's injury was heartbreaking and that it was one of the things that one never knows why it happened. The 60-year-old wished Andreescu a speedy recovery and claimed that many would want to see her back on the court quickly.
"Just heartbreaking. We've seen the level of play that she has shown us in the past, what a great player. You talk about the injury bug, just hasn't been able to stay healthy, and now she's finally getting back on the court, consistently playing at the highest levels of the game," Paul Annacone said.
"These are one of the things that you just don't know why. We send her great thoughts and hope that it's a quick recovery. We want her back on the courts, we want her happy and healthy, and, it's just a tough thing to see," he added.
Annacone's colleague and former WTA top-10 player Chanda Rubin said that Bianca Andreescu's injury was something one would hate to see happen on a tennis court.
"When you see a player like Andreescu who is so talented, who is so fun to watch, who is already a champion, a Major champion, and it looked like she was finding her form again, it looked like she was starting to get things going, she looked physically fit, and you just hate to see this happen on court," Chanda Rubin said.
"We saw Alexandrova there going over to give her a hug, this is not the way a player wants to get through, and we just wish her a healthy recovery," she added.
Bianca Andreescu has won 9 out of 16 matches in 2023
Bianca Andreescu has won nine out of 16 matches so far this season, with her best performance being reaching the semifinals of the Thailand Open before retiring against Lesia Tsurenko due to an injury.
Before her run to the fourth round in Miami, the Canadian reached the third round of the BNP Paribas Open before losing to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Many would be eager to know the extent of Andreescu's injury and how long she will be out of action.
