Paula Badosa gave her take on former World No. 3 Pam Shriver's comments on women’s scheduling at the 2025 Australian Open. Shriver claimed that women’s matches were intentionally slotted in the day session and priority was given to men’s games in the night session.
Paula Badosa clinched her fourth-round win against Olga Danilovic in straight sets. She comfortably won the first set 6-1. In the second set, the Serbian was leading 2-5, before the Spaniard made a comeback to claim the second set in the tie-breaker 7-6.
In the post-match press conference, Badosa was asked to share her thoughts on the remarks made by Pam Shriver on the scheduling of the Australian Open. The World No. 12 did not relate to the comments made by Shriver as she said:
“We had everyday women’s matches, late also. I was one of them. Particularly, talking personally about me, I like to play early, I am an early morning person. It’s great because you can finish earlier, you have a good sleep. Sometimes when you play late it’s tough to go to sleep, it’s tough to rest. So for me personally it was good and I think tomorrow we are having late night matches. So, I don’t know the reason of today but for me it was great,” Badosa said.
The Spaniard's disagreement with Shriver's comments echoed that of Aryna Sabalenka, who also expressed her indifference to the arguments made by the American tennis legend. The Belarusian was fine with the timings and did not suspect any biased scheduling.
Paula Badosa will face Coco Gauff in the 2025 Australian Open QF
Paula Badosa has reached the quarterfinals for the first time at the Down Under. In her sixth appearance at the Australian Major, this is her best result, as she has only dropped one set in the tournament so far.
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is also coming off a strong comeback win against Belinda Bencic. The 20-year-old defeated the Swiss 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday, January 19. Their fourth-round match saw Bencic drop a set for the first time at this year's Melbourne Major as Gauff dominated with 17 winners in the second set and 10 in the third, while Bencic managed only two winners combined. The American also improved her first-serve win percentage, rising from 74% in the first set to 80% in the last two, further cementing her control over the match.
Gauff will now face Paula Badosa on Tuesday, January 21. Both of them have shared the spoils in their previous six meetings, with their head-to-head reading 3-3.
