Fans drew comparisons between Paula Badosa and her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas after she collapsed from a strong lead to lose her 2024 US Open quarterfinal against Emma Navarro. Badosa was up 5-1 in the second set before Navarro staged an extraordinary comeback to win the set and advance to the semifinals.
26th seed Badosa and 13th seed Navarro were playing their quarterfinal at the New York Major on Tuesday, September 3, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The American was quick off the blocks winning the first three games before Badosa finally won her first. At 5-2, Navarro broke Badosa for a second time to win the set.
In the second set, the match took a dramatic turn. Badosa broke Navarro twice to secure a commanding 5-1 lead, with a deciding set looming large on the quarterfinal encounter. However, the tide shifted once more as the Spaniard collapsed, allowing the American to win six consecutive games and clinch the match 6-2, 7-5.
Fans took to X to express their shock at the magnitude of the 26-year-old's falter. They compared her to her Greek boyfriend Tsitsipas, who faced a shock loss in the first round at the event.
"Paula Badosa really went full Tsitsipas. Never go full Tsitsipas," one fan wrote.
"That was the sign that Badosa will never be at her best ever again.. losing a set up 5-1 is unreal," another fan wrote.
"After watching this 2nd Set, Badosa and Tsitsipas weren't kidding when they said they're soulmates... Truly meant for each other," a third fan wrote.
"Humiliating collapse Badosa, Tsitsi patheticness rubbing off on her," yet another fan wrote.
However, some fans expressed concern for the Spaniard.
"That was a tough watch that second set. Paula was incredibly aggressive initially that 2nd set and then not entirely sure what happened. Serve clearly wasn't great today but something didn't seem right full stop as the set went on Paula seemed to lose spirit. Hope she's ok," one fan wrote.
"Feel for badosa," another fan wrote.
