The 2024 WTA season may be over, but Coco Gauff has opted against taking a complete break. Instead, the 20-year-old has returned to the gym early to kick off her pre-season training. Her workouts have been highly intense, as she was seen wearing a metabolic mask.
Gauff began the year on a strong note, successfully defending her title at the ASB Classic in Auckland. However, she faced challenges with form throughout the season before finishing on a high note with a victory at the WTA Finals.
On Monday, Gauff shared a selfie on her Instagram story, wearing a metabolic mask while running on a treadmill. In the caption, she announced it was her "first day back," accompanied by a playful squinting face emoji.
The World No. 3 also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her excitement about the pre-season.
“first day of preseason gives first day of school vibes,” she wrote
Going down memory lane, Gauff followed a similar training regimen in the previous season. In November 2023, she shared an image of herself wearing the same metabolic mask. In that post, she paid tribute to the DC supervillain Bane by adding an emoji of the character alongside the picture.
A glimpse at Coco Gauff's standout performances during the 2024 season
After an outstanding 2023 season, where she achieved her maiden Grand Slam victory at the US Open, Coco Gauff entered the 2024 season with high expectations.
She began her campaign at the ASB Classic in Auckland by defeating Claire Liu, Brenda Fruhvirtová, Varvara Gracheva, and Emma Navarro before beating Elina Svitolina in the final to claim her first title of the year.
Her second title came 10 months later, at the China Open in October. Gauff beat Clara Burel and Katie Boulter in the early rounds and defeated Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. She then beat Yuliia Starodubtseva in the quarterfinals and Spain's Paula Badosa in the semifinals before defeating Karolína Muchová in the final.
Gauff then participated in the 2024 WTA Finals, marking her third time appearance at the tournament. In the round-robin stage, she got the better of Jessica Pegula and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek but fell to Barbora Krejčíková in her final group match. In the semifinals, Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka to set up a final showdown with Zheng Qinwen, against whom she claimed the title. This win made her the first American to claim the year-end title since Serena Williams in 2014.
