Nadal, who had been struggling with injuries for the past couple of years, had hinted on many occasions that his career might end.
He took part in several tournaments during the 2024 European clay swing and competed in the Paris Olympics. However, the 'King of Clay' seemed to be a former shadow of himself. He skipped the US Open and the Laver Cup as well.
It was recently announced that he would join Spain's squad for the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, which sparked rumors that it might be the 22-time Major champion's final outing.
On 10 October, Nadal took to Instagram to announce, in an emotional video message, that he would retire after his campaign at the Davis Cup Finals.
This news sent shockwaves all over the sporting fraternity as they left heartfelt tributes in the comments section. Former and current stars of Real Madrid, which is the favorite club of the 14-time Roland Garros champion, were also among them.
Cristiano Ronaldo praised the Spaniard for his character and called him an inspiration for many before wishing him the best in his retirement:
"Rafa, what an incredible race you’ve had! Your dedication, passion and incredible talent have inspired millions around the world. It has been an honor to witness your journey and to be able to call you a friend. Congrats on an amazing career! Enjoy your retirement." (a translated version of Ronaldo's comment)
Current Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe also had an emotional message for the Spanish legend:
"Congratulations on your career Rafa, an example as a player and a person. Enjoy your retirement. You will always be a legend."
Former Real Madrid superstar Toni Kroos wrote:
"What an example as a player and most important as a person! See you soon Rafa."
Moto GP rider Marc Marquez and former Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn also left tributes.

"I think I’ve come full circle": Rafael Nadal delighted with his final tournament being the 2024 Davis Cup Finals
In his retirement message, Rafael Nadal said that he was excited that the 2024 Davis Cup Finals would be the swansong of his career since competing at the event in 2004 was one of his happiest moments.
The former World No. 1 has won the event five times (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2019).
"I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country. I think I’ve come full circle, since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004."
In the tournament, the 38-year-old will be with his Paris Olympics doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Marcel Granollers. David Ferrer will be the captain.
Spain will take on the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on 19 November.
