Carlos Alcaraz is looking forward to learning from Rafael Nadal at the Paris Olympics, where the 21-year-old is set to pair up with the veteran to represent Spain in men's doubles. Nadal will be in familiar territory at the Games, with the tennis tournament slated to take place at the Stade Roland Garros. The 38-year-old has won a record 14 French Open titles on the prestigious tennis venue's Court Philippe Chatrier.
Nadal has vast Olympics experience as well, having won gold in 2008 in the men's singles category and then again in 2016 in men's doubles. In contrast, this year's Games will be Alcaraz's maiden Olympics outing.
Right now, Alcaraz is gearing up to kickstart his 2024 grasscourt campaign on the back of his first-ever title triumph at the French Open. Ahead of his opening match at Queen's, where he is the defending champion, Alcaraz touched on what it means for him to have the opportunity of partnering Nadal at the Olympics.
The World No. 2 opined that Nadal is going to share all the wisdom he has gained from playing at Roland Garros over the years. Alcaraz also acknowledged his own youth and inexperience, along with his need to continue growing, both as a human being and a tennis player.
"He (Nadal) knows very well what Roland Garros is. I think he's going to teach me how to deal with everything. I am the young boy who needs to grow as a player and as a person," Alcaraz said during a press conference.
The three-time Grand Slam winner concluded by saying that winning a medal at the 2024 Olympics with Nadal would be a "dream".
"Having him by my side playing doubles, practicing... They are my first Games. A lot of new things. It would be a dream for me to get a medal with him," Alcaraz added.
"I haven't played doubles for a long time" - Rafael Nadal's recent admission on teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz at the Olympics
Nadal was recently quizzed about his thoughts on his doubles hopes at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside Alcaraz. The 22-time Grand Slam winner said that despite his recent lack of doubles matches, he wants to be "as prepared as possible". The former World No. 1 was also full of praise for Alcaraz, citing his young compatriot's French Open success.
"I'm going to try to arrive as well prepared as possible. I haven't played doubles for a long time, but Carlos is in a fantastic moment after winning in Paris, so I will try to arrive as best as possible and be as prepared as possible to be a good partner for him," Nadal said (via Punto de Break).
The 2024 Olympics' tennis tournament is scheduled to get underway on Saturday, July 27.
