Rafael Nadal recently claimed that during his 'generation' he dominated clay, Roger Federer dominated grass, and the Swiss dominated hard courts along with Novak Djokovic. Several fans disagreed with the Spaniard's statement as they felt that it disregarded Djokovic's dominance across surfaces.
Nadal is currently playing in the Nordea Open in Bastad. He is preparing for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, which will be played on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, recently won his second Wimbledon title. After claiming the grasscourt Slam in 2023, he defended his title successfully this year. Moreover, his triumph came just over a month after winning his first French Open title.
Alcaraz's versatile skill-set is reflected in the record that he is the youngest man to earn a Major trophy on all three surfaces. Nadal highlighted this in a recent interview.
"No matter what surface, he [Alcaraz] will be the favorite. That's something we haven't seen in my generation. I was the favorite on clay but on grass, it was Roger (Federer). On hard, it was between Roger and Novak and then me a little later. But none of us were the favorites before every tournament," Nadal said (via L'Equipe).
An X account posted the Spaniard's statement.
Fans were unhappy with how the Spaniard seemingly disregarded Djokovic's dominance on multiple surfaces.
"On grass it was Roger …??? That’s why he lost all 3 Wimbledon finals against Novak 😂😂😂…what a salty , classless clown this Clay merchant," one fan wrote.
"So Novak was never the favourite, maybe only hard court. Rafa is shameless," another fan wrote.
"Rafa on Clay, Roger on Grass but Novak the fav on all surface and threat to anyone one any surface no matter what, similar to Alcaraz now," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more reactions to the Spaniard's statement.
"🤣🤣🤣 man hasn’t won a match against Novak on hard in 15 years," one fan wrote.
"Bro is always jealous of Djokovic," another fan claimed.
"On hard was between Roger and Novak, lol what a clown, 12 years now since the last set won," a third fan wrote.
