Rafael Nadal has announced he will not be playing in the 2024 US Open, saying he doesn't believe he can perform at his best. He has also confirmed the location of his next tournament.
Nadal's withdrawal from the New York Major follows a disappointing run at the Paris Olympics. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round of singles. His doubles campaign with Carlos Alcaraz also didn't go as planned. Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek of the USA defeated the duo in the quarterfinals, sending the 38-year-old packing without a medal.
Nadal took to X (formerly Twitter) on August 8 to announce the news and revealed that he will compete at the Laver Cup next. This marks the third Grand Slam the Spaniard will miss this year, having previously withdrawn from the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
"Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories. I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time," the 22-time Grand Slam champion wrote.
"Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin," he added.
Rafael Nadal: "If I don't have the desire, strength, or motivation to continue, I will hang up my racket"
Rafael Nadal spoke to the media after his campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics ended and discussed his retirement, which might happen at the end of this season, as he had hinted before.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion said he would consider hanging up his racquet after returning home from Paris and taking some time to 'disconnect.' He also mentioned he would do it when he no longer feels the "desire, strength, or motivation" to continue.
"I had set the Olympics as a goal since the beginning of the year and this cycle has ended," Nadal said. "Now I will return home, to disconnect, and when I have decided what my next step is, whether with a racket in my hand or without, I will let you know."
"If I don't have the desire, strength, or motivation to continue, I will hang up my racket," he added.
Nadal is a four-time champion at the US Open, which runs from August 26 to September 8 this year. It’s also where he completed the Career Grand Slam in 2010.
