The semi-final of the 2024 Hall of Fame Open will see two Americans, Reilly Opelka and Alex Michelsen, lock horns with each other. Michelsen is the third seed in the tournament whereas Opelka received a wild card for the tournament. Michelsen's season in 2024 has not been the most rewarding, as the young American has a 13-18 record for the season. He has reached the quarter-finals of a few events but has not managed to advance beyond that stage.

At the majors as well, Michelsen showed glimpses of good form. He defeated higher-ranked Jiri Lehecka in the second round of the Australian Open. Even he though he lost in the first round, Michelsen played an epic five-setter against Lloyd Harris of South Africa.

At the Hall of Fame Opem, the higher seeding helped Michelsen get a bye in the first round. Micheslen then defeated two American opponents in the next two rounds. He got a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maxime Cressy in the second round. He followed it up with a victory over Aleksander Kovacevic with a similar scoreline in the quarter-final.

The 2024 Hall of Fame Open is the first ATP event that Reilly Opelka is playing after almost two years. The 6ft 11 inch American sustained a hip injury in 2022, that kept him out of action for two years. However, Opelka has given a good account of himself on the grass courts of Newport. He went past Constant Lestienne in a third-set tiebreak in the opening round.

In the next round, Opelka defeated the defending champion Adrian Mannarino in three sets. The American came back from a set down to win against Mackenzie McDonald in the quarter-final. With a current rank of 1188, Opelka became the lowest-ranked player to advance to the semi-final of an ATP event in the history of men's tennis.

Both players have not faced each other previously, but given the form of both players, the match has the prospect of being a thrilling three-set battle. Here are the details of the match.
