Roger Federer might not be active on the tennis tour anymore, but that hasn't stopped the 20-time Grand Slam champion from making his presence known in the sports world. The Swiss, in fact, has broken the internet after fans noticed a strange detail about his name.
Widely considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Federer ended his career in 2022 at the Laver Cup. He won 20 Grand Slam titles and is still the man with the most Wimbledon titles (eight) in the Open Era.
On January 3, a Twitter (now X) page - 'World of Statistics' - published an interesting comment, noticing how Roger Federer's name was '50% "er."' As for what it meant, the Swiss' name has 12 characters, with three 'er' repititions, accounting for 50% of his name.
The post went immediately viral, garnering almost 1.5 million views. Over 42,000 users also liked the post, with 4,000 users sharing it as well.
Fans also commented their thoughts on the detail, ranging from marveling at the realization to hilariously extending the statistic to other players.
"How have I gone over two decades without realizing this?" one said.
"50% Rog Fed. 50% er. 100% GOAT," another wrote.
"Jannik Sinner is 33% "nn,"" one fan pointed out.
What has Roger Federer been up to since retirement?
In an interview with GQ Sports earlier last year, Roger Federer spoke about his retirement, saying that he was 'really relieved' and that he feels at peace now that he has hung up his racket.
"I’m really relieved, if that makes any sense," Roger Federer said.
"I mean, the last few years have been tough with my knee. You could feel the end coming closer. So when it’s all said and done and you’re over the line and you’re retired officially, you take a deep breath and you’re like, “Wow, okay, that was good," he added.
Since then, the former World No. 1 has taken on a plethora of roles, partnering with Oliver Peoples, Uniqlo and traveling the world with his family.
"I get that question a lot, and I don’t miss it. I really don’t. I feel really at peace. I think it’s also because I know that my knee and my body and my mind don’t allow me to be out there. Do I feel like, Oh, I could hit that shot? Yeah, okay: Maybe I could right now. But I feel like I squeezed the lemon out. I tried everything I had. And I’m so at peace," Federer said in the interview when asked if he missed tennis after retirement.
Last year, the Swiss icon released a documentary chronicling the final days of his career, which was released on Amazon Prime to wide fanfare.
