Roger Federer recalling an incident from the past where he rejected a second training session with Carlos Alcaraz has rubbed some fans the wrong way. They questioned the Swiss' behavior and tried to determine the meaning behind his actions.

During the 2019 Wimbledon, Federer asked for Juan Carlos Ferrero's help in practice ahead of his quarterfinal match against Kei Nishikori. Ferrero, who was Alcaraz's coach, got the young Spaniard a hitting session with the Swiss. However, when asked by his coach if he would want to train with the Spaniard again, the 20-time Major champion said he would rather practice with Ferrero again since he was a player from his generation.

Looking back on this incident ahead of the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin, the 43-year-old said he needed to apologize to the 21-year-old during the three-day exhibition event.

However, fans didn't take too kindly to the Swiss' comments as they took to X (formerly Twitter) to lash out at him. One of the fans felt that the former World No.1's jealousy and arrogance towards players he thought were better than him needed to be studied. They cited Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz as examples of players better than the Swiss and wrote:

"Roger Federer's jealousy and arrogance towards players that he deep down knows are better than him like Rafa, Novak and Carlos needs to be studied," the fan commented.

Another fan mentioned how Alcaraz, at 21, had more Grand Slams than the Swiss had at the same age. They also mentioned how the Spaniard defeated Djokovic twice at Wimbledon (2023 & 2024), the player who Federer lost to thrice in the final at SW19, which, according to the fan, was the ultimate 'redemption'.

"This time he would meeting the guy who had more slams at 21 than him & 2 Wimbledons defeating the guy he lost to thrice in the finals This is called redemption @carlosalcaraz," the fan mentioned.

Here are some other reactions from the fans.

"Never really understood why @rogerfederer has this sort of indifference about some of the new players whilst he is still friends with likes of @janniksin Why never something like that for @carlosalcaraz or @iga_swiatek," a fan questioned.
"Idk why everyone wants to see a photo of carlos and fedora together. that man is not even better than rafa and djokovic. who cares about the third best player when the actual best player djokovic likes you??" a fan claimed.
"Lmaoooo he has more slams at 21 than Roger had," a fan quipped.
"Listen RF no bigger fan then me here but this is ur real heir to tennis throne here. Please show him so much love this weekend. And if you would like to throw in some spot serving tips we from Alcaraz nation would greatly appreciate it 😌," a fan said.

2019 was the final time Federer would make it to the final at Wimbledon. He lost to Novak Djokovic in a historic five-setter, failing to convert his two championship points.

When Roger Federer announced his retirement in 2022, Carlos Alcaraz, a huge fan of the Swiss, took to his social media to pen a heartfelt note for the 20-time Major champion.

The Spaniard called the 43-year-old one of his idols and a player who inspired him a lot. Alcaraz thanked him for everything he had done for tennis and expressed that he still wished to play with the Swiss Maestro before finally wishing him the best for his future endeavors. He also posted a picture of the two of them together from their practice session at Wimbledon and wrote:

"Roger has been one of my idols and a source of inspiration! 🥲 Thank you for everything you have done for our sport! ❤️ I still want to play with you! 🥹 Wish you all the luck in the world for what comes next! 💪🏻@rogerfederer," Alcaraz tweeted.

Roger Federer retired from tennis at the 2022 Laver Cup. In his final match, he teamed up with his longtime rival Rafael Nadal to take on Team World's Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Though the match ended in Team World's favor, an emotional farewell celebrating the illustrious career of the Swiss followed.

The Swiss has arrived in Berlin for the 2024 Laver Cup where Alcaraz will be making his debut and representing Team Europe alongside Grigor Dimitrov, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev.
