Roger Federer set for US Open return for the first time since retirement at Frances Tiafoe vs Grigor Dimitrov QF blockbuster

Roger Federer recently disclosed that he will be making his return to the US Open since his retirement in September 2022. He will be attending the quarterfinal match between Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov at Flushing Meadows.

Federer is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles in his career and also held the World No.1 ranking for 310 weeks. He has also won a men's doubles Olympic gold medal with Stan Wawrinka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal in singles at the 2012 London Olympics.

Recently, while speaking on 'Today,' an American morning television show, the Swiss legend shared that he has not visited the US Open since his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup.

“Went to Wimbledon this year and I’ll go to the Open actually tonight. So I haven’t been back at the Open since I retired. So it’s going to be also I’m sure nice to be in Ashe, you know, watching tennis from the sidelines this time. It's the first time I would ever do that,” he said.

The former World No.1 will be present at the quarterfinal match between Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov. Tiafoe, who is seeded 20th earned his spot in the last eight by defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexander Shevchenko, 13th seed Ben Shelton, and 28th seed Alexei Popyrin.

Meanwhile, Dimitrov, seeded ninth, secured his place in the quarterfinals by overcoming Kyrian Jacquet, Rinky Hijikata, Tallon Griekspoor, and sixth seed Andrey Rublev.

Roger Federer was seeded second at the 2008 US Open. He began his campaign by defeating Maximo Gonzalez 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round and then overcame qualifier Thiago Alves 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round.

In the third round, the 20-time Grand Slam champion triumphed over 28th Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 and then registered a 6-7(5), 7-6(5),6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over 23rd seed Igor Andreev in the fourth round.

Roger Federer defeated qualifier Gilles Muller 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals, and third seed Novak Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals. He triumphed over sixth seed Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 in the final to win his fifth US Open title and his 13th Grand Slam title overall.
