Roger Federer continued his philanthropic work off the court by visiting Lesotho in southern Africa earlier this week.
The Swiss legend, who is the president of the Roger Federer Foundation, met with local authorities and communities to see the impact of his foundation’s projects. The projects aim to provide early formal schooling for vulnerable children.
Federer even visited the primary schools that have participated in the School Readiness Initiative. He also interacted with children and parents who are benefitting from the program.
On Monday, Federer shared some snippets of his trip on Instagram, posting a series of photos of himself and his wife Mirka spending time with the program participants. The 20-time Grand Slam champion and his wife were both spotted enjoying their time with students, playing and engaging with them on the playground.
"An unforgettable trip to Lesotho: so many energetic and smiling children, engaged parents and teachers, committed leaders, and a breathtaking landscape. Thanks to everybody for the warm welcome📚🙏🏼 I will definitely be back!", Federer captioned his post.
The Roger Federer Foundation was founded in 2003. It is dedicated to improving structured learning opportunities for pre-school age children in six countries in southern Africa and Switzerland.
The foundation’s work has already impacted 2.5 million children and has a goal of reaching 800 preschools in Lesotho by 2025, through an investment of 3 million USD. The foundation’s School Readiness Initiative uses innovative technology to equip teachers with tablets containing digital resources and applications.
Roger Federer opens up about his retirement plans, how he plans to keep in touch with the new generation, and more
Roger Federer's retirement last year created a huge void in the sport that he had dominated for so long, along with his rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. But Federer is not ready to say goodbye to tennis completely.
He recently revealed his plans for his post-playing career in an interview with Swiss media.
According to the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, Federer said that he will keep training and working on his foundation, business, and sponsorship deals. He also said that he might try commentary work – something that he did not expect himself to say.
"I never thought I would say this. But six months ago, I suddenly thought: commentating on tennis someday, who knows? Although I always said I would never do that. But so to commentate on some matches at Wimbledon..." said Roger Federer.
Federer clarified that he will not be a full-time commentator but might do it occasionally to keep in touch with the tour and the players. He also said that he enjoys watching tennis and that it is a good way for him to stay connected to the game he loves.
"No, he (John McEnroe) makes too much. But being there every now and then would also allow me to keep in touch with the tour, the players, the new generation. And it would give me a reason to definitely watch tennis, which I like to do. When I suddenly had this in my head, I thought: Am I completely crazy now?" said Roger Federer.
