The city of Chennai is all set to host RWD Open, which is a unique city-based league-cum-knockout tennis championship for clubs. Backed by the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, this new format promises to throw up some exciting club-level matches throughout the months of August and September.
Accordingly, each tie at the RWD Open will consist of five doubles matches, with pairs playing in the age categories 30+, 35+, two at 45+, and one at 55+. Outright winners of ties will be determined by the total number of games won.
Sixteen clubs will take part, divided into four groups of four. The winner of each group will go through to the semi-finals and subsequentially into the final match.
The tournament is expected to have the participation of some noted players—Somdev Devvarman, G Rajesh, Vinod Sridhar, Vijay Kannan, and Sai Jayalakshmi, which adds a lot of glitz to this event. The total prize money for the tournament is Rs 2 lakh, with the winner getting Rs 1 lakh, the runner-up Rs 50,000, and the losing semi-finalists Rs 25,000 each.
Which clubs will partake in RWD Open tennis tournament?
The participating clubs are Anna Nagar K Block - A, Anna Nagar K Block - B, Besant Nagar Club - A, Besant Nagar Club - B, Cosmopolitan Club, Gandhi Nagar Club - A, Gandhi Nagar Club - B, Indra Nagar Sports Club, Madras Cricket Club, Madras Race Club, Madras United Club, Nungambakkam Tennis Club, Presidency Club, Ransa Club, YMCA Kilpauk, and YMCA Nandanam.
TNTA president, Vijay Amritraj, believes in the growth factor for the tournament, with a wide level of interest in tennis itself within Chennai and Tamil Nadu. He was quoted as saying by the association:
"Considering the interest in tennis in Chennai and Tamil Nadu, I am confident the event will grow in the years to come.”
