A former Wimbledon champion recently took umbrage ar Nick Kyrgios' incessant attack on Jannik Sinner amid the World No. 1's doping controversy. Sinner escaped a ban from the International Tennis Integrity Agency after testing positive for Clostebol in March. However, the ITIA passed the verdict that he bore 'No Significant Fault or Negligence' and allowed him to continue playing.
This decision didn't sit well with many in the tennis fraternity, most notably Kyrgios, who has been questioning the verdict since it was passed and demanded that the World No. 1 be banned. He recently claimed that he would cause an 'absolute riot' at the Australian Open if he were to face the Italian superstar. However, his scathing attacks on Sinner have been dubbed controversial by many.
With even fans asking the ATP to reprimand the Aussie, 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli said she wasn't surprised by Kyrgios' controversial attack since he had done the same with Stan Wawrinka in the past, alluding to their incident at the 2015 Rogers Cup.
“I am not surprised, because Kyrgios lives and breathes nothing but provocative statements. I would remind you that this is a player who was capable of saying absolute horrors to Stan Wawrinka, who is one of the most polite, most loved and most respected players on a tennis court, at a Masters 1000 in the middle of a match," she said on 'Les Grandes Gueules du Sport' on RMC Sports.
Bartoli, famous for her two-handed forehand, added:
“We don’t even know what’s going through his head, I’m not even going to tell you what he said, those who follow tennis know. Now, with all his provocative statements, after a while, you just get fed up. It’s enough!”
During their second-round match, the 29-year-old remarked how Thanasi Kokkinakis had been intimate with the Swiss' then-girlfriend Donna Vekic. The Aussie was punished with a $10,000 fine. Though Wawrinka didn't listen to Kyrgios' remarks during the match, the courtside microphones caught the comments and the Swiss later expressed his disgust at them on his social media.
"Jannik Sinner isn't going to respond" - Marion Bartoli feels that the 'virtually unbeatable' Italian's racket will do all the talk against Nick Kyrgios
Continuing her thoughts via 'Les Grandes Gueules du Sport' on RMC Sports, Marion Bartoli said that World No. 1 Jannik Sinner would let his racket do all the talking against a returning Nick Kyrgios.
“In any case, Sinner isn’t going to respond. And if he plays it on the court, even if it’s still tennis, on the one hand we have a player who is world No 1, has just won two Grand Slams and has become virtually unbeatable, and on the other a Nick Kyrgios who hasn’t played in official competition since June 13, 2023,” she added.
Interestingly, Kyrgios recently addressed his controversy with Stan Wawrinka on the Lous Theroux Podcast, where he brushed off his comments off as 'old-fashioned trash talk'.
