Sebastian Korda's 2024 US Open campaign ended in the second round as he lost to Tomas Machac in straight sets. Korda had earlier won his first-round match against Corentin Moutet.
Against Machac, the American started strong, quickly gaining a 4-2 lead before losing four straight games to lose the first set 4-6. In the second set, Korda's serve got broken twice and he lost the set 2-6. The World No. 16 was on course for a comeback as he started the third set strong, gaining a 4-1 advantage. However, he was unable to maintain his momentum, losing five consecutive games and ultimately dropping the set 4-6.
The poor showing by the American left fans aghast as he once again failed to make a deep run in his home slam. He has a 2-5 win-loss record at the US Open and has never made it past the second round.
Some fans expressed their disappointment on X (formerly Twitter) following Korda's unexpected loss. One fan criticized the American player, labeling him an 'embarrassment' to US tennis.
"Sebastian Korda is an embarrassment to USA tennis. A pathetic excuse for a tennis player that guy," a fan wrote.
"And my dumb*ss predicted Korda to beat Alcaraz in the quarterfinals," another fan commented.
"Sebastian Korda looses 3-0 after being up 4-2 in the 1st and 3rd set on his own home soil pathetic excuse for a tennis player I will never speak well on ur pathetic career again," a fan opined.
Another fan tagged him as an underachieving player.
"Sebastian Korda is the newest star of "US Open ATP underachieving players to bow out in the first 2 rounds!" A magnificent performance (in terms of being faithful to the ATP Tour theme this week -- very much on script)," they wrote.
"Korda shouldn’t be in top 100. Biggest mental midget of all time, waste of talent," another fan opined.
One fan was left disappointed as this could have been a big break for the 24-year-old.
"That was Seb’s chance for a big break pathway, disappointing that," they wrote.
"Korda try not to disappoint me challenge *impossible*," wrote yet another fan.
Sebastian Korda's disappointing end to the North American hard court swing after strong start
Sebastian Korda began the North American hard court swing with a title at the Citi Open. He defeated the likes of Cristian Garin, Frances Tiafoe, and Flavio Cobolli on the way to the biggest title of his career.
He then followed it up with a semifinal run at the Canadian Open, before losing to the eventual champion Alexei Popyrin. The American knocked off Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev on his way to the semifinal.
However, the World No. 16 suffered early exits at the Cincinnati Open and US Open to end the North American hard court swing on a low.
