Sebastian Korda recently revealed that he underwent elbow surgery. The American, who has been missing in action since the US Open, expressed his desire to return to the court soon.
Korda, who had been rising up the ranks steadily this year, had a fairy tale start at the North American hard-court season, as he won the first ATP 500 title of his career at the Citi Open. He defeated the likes of Jordan Thompson, Frances Tiafoe, Flavio Cobolli, and others en route.
The 24-year-old took this form into the Canadian Open where he defeated the likes of American No. 1 Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev to reach the first Masters 1000 semifinals of his career, before falling to eventual champion Alexei Popyrin.
However, the American's form took a tumble after the Canadian Open as he fell to Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. This got worse for him as he lost to Tomas Machac in the second round of the US Open
Since then, the World No. 19 has been out of action and did not play a single tournament in the Asian swing.
After multiple tournament withdrawals including the Hangzhou Open and the Shanghai Masters, Sebastian Korda took to Instagram to announce that he had been facing troubles in his elbow following which he had surgery. He shared an image of himself in a hospital bed, with the caption reading:
"Hi everyone, I wanted to update you all—I’ve been dealing with some elbow issues and my team and I decided surgery was the best option. Everything went great, and I can’t wait to be back on court soon. Thanks for all your support! 🙏❤️.
Sebastian Korda and Petr Korda became the first-ever father-son duo in the ATP to be ranked in the Top 20 this year
Earlier this year, Sebastian Korda wrote his name in the history books alongside Petr Korda, when they became the first father-son duo to be ranked inside the Top 20 since the inception of the ATP rankings in 1973.
The 24-year-old achieved this feat during the grass swing when he reached back-to-back semifinals at the Libema Open and the Queen's Club Championships. Sebastian did not stop there as his brilliant runs in Washington and Montreal helped him enter the Top 15. Meanwhile, his father Petr reached a career-high ranking of World No. 2 in 1998, when he won the Australian Open.
Sebastian Korda has won 31 out of 50 matches so far in the 2024 season. Apart from the North American hard-court season, the American also reached the final of the Libema Open and the semifinals of the Cinch Championships.
