Emma Navarro was delighted to have cruised past Coco Gauff at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on Sunday (July 7). Following their match, the American disclosed how Gauff and her coaching team’s lack of coordination positively impacted her.

Navarro took on World No. 2 Gauff in the fourth round at SW19. She dismissed Wang Qiang, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and an in-form Diana Shnaider in the first three rounds, respectively. In her match against Coco Gauff, too, Emma Navarro came out with all guns blazing to dismiss the reigning US Open champion in just over an hour with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline.

During the second set, her opponent’s aggression and accuracy visibly rattled Gauff, and she frequently glanced at her box for guidance. However, she and her entire team seemed to be on different wavelengths, with the tennis player ultimately unsatisfied with the responses she received.

When asked about the bizarre incident in her post-match press conference, Navarro said Gauff’s animated argument with her team proved to be a “confidence boost” for her.

"It’s definitely a little bit of a confidence boost just knowing that your gameplan is doing what you wanted it to do," she said.

The 23-year-old added that while she usually refrains from paying attention to her opponent, she gained energy knowing Coco Gauff was struggling to find solutions.

"I don’t normally give the other side of the court too much energy, I keep it on my side of the court. But yeah, I guess seeing her kind of frustrated and looking at her box and putting her arms up in the air – it’s definitely a little bit of a confidence boost," she said about Gauff yelling at her team.
"I guess that maybe gave me a little bit of momentum and some energy that I needed," Emma Navarro added.

Emma Navarro faces Jasmine Paolini for a spot in Wimbledon 2024 semifinals after Coco Gauff win

Emma Navarro has reached her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. She is chasing her first Major and her second career title, following her success at Hobart International earlier this year.

After making light work of Coco Gauff, the World No. 17 is set to take on Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals. Just like Navarro, Paolini, too, is having a breakthrough season. She clinched her maiden WTA 1000 title in Dubai and made her first Grand Slam final at the 2024 French Open.

When it comes to Navarro, though, the World No. 7 doesn’t boast a promising record. Jasmine Paolini fell short in all three of her matches against the American, two of which came this year, at the WTA 1000 events in Miami and Doha.

Emma Navarro would thus fancy her chances of causing yet another upset to reach a first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon.
