Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian has revealed the aspect of athlete life that he did not "appreciate" enough before meeting his wife. The Reddit co-founder claimed that time invested away from the sport to recover and recharge is essential.

In a recent conversation with former NFL player Justin Tuck, Ohanian reflected on the challenges of professional athletes’ lives. He posted the video of the conversation on Instagram and X.

"This is something I did not appreciate until I found myself in a relationship with a professional athlete, which is the amount of time that you all have to invest in time away from the game. In making sure that you're getting this time, this nourishment, whether it's the time with family, the philanthropic work," he said.

"As fans, as outsiders, we don't appreciate how much time it takes to actually lock yourself away from all of that work. So, you can give yourself mentally and physically time to recover and recharge."

Williams and Ohanian’s relationship started in 2015 soon after they met. Just over a year later, they got engaged in December 2016, and in November 2017, they tied the knot. However, their journey as parents began in September 2017, when they welcomed their first daughter, Olympia.

Williams continued to compete at the highest level in tennis, even while balancing motherhood, until the 2022 US Open, where she played her final match on the tour. The couple expanded their family with the arrival of their second daughter, Adira, in August 2023.

In 2018, during an interview with the New York Times, Alexis Ohanian revealed that he would not watch tennis before meeting Serena Williams:

"I used to change the channel when tennis was on. Then I watched my first match when I met her, and quickly got an appreciation for the sport. It’s not just the physical requirements but the mental requirements. I could not imagine doing my job with millions of people watching."

The 41-year-old once believed he was the hardest-working person on Earth and that the tech industry was the most demanding. However, he later realized that this mindset was far from the truth.

Ohanian, whose net worth is $150 million, currently runs several ventures. His wife has also taken to entrepreneurship. She owns a beauty brand, WYN, and a venture-capital business named after herself.
