Serena Williams' childhood coach, Rick Macci, shared his thoughts on Novak Djokovic as the Serbian star pursues his 25th Grand Slam title. Achieving the milestone would see him break Margaret Court's long-standing record, which has held for decades.
Djokovic didn’t have the season he might have hoped for in 2024, particularly in the Majors, as he failed to win any titles despite reaching the final at Wimbledon. However, he found some consolation by securing a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, rounding out his remarkable career resume.
The Serbian has teamed up with his former rival Andy Murray as his coach for 2025, aiming to reach even greater heights. Before heading to the new season, he received some valuable advice from Macci, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“The Serbian Sniper has nothing left to prove except to himself. ONE MORE= BECAUSE MR.GOAT WON MORE @DjokerNole."
Serena Williams’ ex-coach backs Novak Djokovic to break Margaret Court's record
Novak Djokovic will head into the 2025 Australian Open with one goal in mind: breaking Margaret Court's Grand Slam record. He has now received support from another veteran coach, Rennae Stubbs, who previously mentored Serena Williams like Rick Macci.
In the latest episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, the Aussie discussed Djokovic's chances in Melbourne. While speaking with Andrea Petkovic, she shared her eagerness for the Serb to win the Major next year, saying she wanted to see Court's record finally put to rest.
"If he wins the Australian Open, I would like him to drop the mic. I would really love to see Novak win one more cause God knows I want that Margaret Court record to be never talked about ever again ‘cause they changed the goal posts,” Stubbs said.
“It was always Steffi Graf. Steffi Graf, 22 grand slams. I mean who’s going to do that at 20? She did that at 29,” she added.
Petkovic chimed in, saying:
"So my prediction for Novak is that he will not give a flying F about any of the tournaments except for the Australian Open and Wimbledon and he will make a huge push with everything he still got left in that cute 40 year old body of his, will put everything into winning one of these, try and get to 25 and then drop the f*** out."
Djokovic will kick off the new season at the Brisbane International, starting on December 30. To add to the intrigue, he will also play doubles with Nick Kyrgios at the tournament.
