Serena Williams' ex-coach Rennae Stubbs is someone who has never been shy about expressing her strong opinions, whether it’s about sporting incidents, political matters, or anything else. This time around, she came to the aid of baseball star Jarren Duran after he was heckled over his past suicide attempt.

In the recently released fourth episode of The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox on Netflix, Jarren Duran opened up about a personal battle, revealing he had attempted suicide during a rough period in the 2022 season. He issued a statement later explaining why he chose to share his story publicly.

Duran, who signed a one-year, $3.85 million contract with the Red Sox in 2025, said:

"Talking about this wasn't easy, but it felt important. I trusted the Netflix crew, and I knew that if I was going to share this, I had to be real about it.”

“A few years ago, I found myself in a dark place, but I'm still here, and I'm so lucky I am. And if my story can help even one person, then it was worth telling. It's that ability to help, to reach those who feel alone, that motivated me to tell my story,” he added.

However, his decision to open up made him a target for heckling. During the Red Sox's recent game against the Cleveland Guardians, a fan was removed from the stadium for taunting him. Later, the outfielder told the media that the fan said "something inappropriate," though he chose not to reveal the exact words.

Rennae Stubbs, who coached the legendary Serena Williams during her final tournament at the 2022 US Open, has now taken to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the incident. She wrote:

“Disgraceful.”

Given the former doubles specialist’s frequent advocacy for mental health in sports, her strong reaction to the incident comes as no surprise.

In 2022, Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs made a strong statement about the importance of discussing mental health in sports during an interview with MSNBC's Nicole Wallace on Deadline: White House's special report on America's mental health crisis.

She stressed that athletes should regularly talk about mental health to foster a healthy and supportive environment, saying:

"Everybody has something, and often, those are things you don't talk about or you don't hear about. And no athlete is going to talk about the vulnerabilities because that is seen as a weakness.”
“Just like men don't talk about these problems because they see it as a weakness. So it's super important that everybody keeps talking about it. And it is an issue,” she added.

Rennae Stubbs may not have had a standout singles career, but she made her mark in doubles, securing four Grand Slam titles and reaching the World No. 1 ranking, along with numerous other achievements.

She has also proven her expertise in coaching not only with Serena Williams but also with players such as Karolina Pliskova, Samantha Stosur, and Eugenie Bouchard.
