Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian celebrates veteran Hollywood actor LeVar Burton as he receives national honor

Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian was full of applause of veteran Hollywood actor LeVar Burton, who was one of the recipients of the National Humanities Medal. Burton is renowned for his role as Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Kunta Kinte in Roots.

A consistent advocate for literacy, Burton is well-known for his children's show Reading Rainbow, and has also developed an app that allows children to access unlimited books. The award, which honors individuals who have greatly impacted the arts and humanities, was presented to him by US President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday.

Upon receiving the award, Burton took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his joy, stating that his ancestors would be proud of his achievement. A few hours after his post, Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, reposted it, calling Burton a "national treasure."

“My ancestors are dancing and my heart is full,” Burton captioned.

“National treasure,” Alexis Ohanian reposted his post.

Apart from being an advocate and investor in women's sports, Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, has also ventured into the film industry. In 2023, he partnered with The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills producer Alex Baskin, soccer star Midge Purce, and sports documentary producers Box to Box Films to create a reality TV show called The Offseason, which highlights the off-season lives of 11 players from the National Women's Soccer League.

Ohanian, a major investor and co-founder of Angel City FC, stated in March 2024 that during the show's production, someone needed to be the first to demonstrate that women's sports could be a viable reality TV concept.

“It was a radical idea in 2019 for me to start an NWSL club in LA, and in 2023, everyone in Hollywood told me it was a radical idea to incubate a production company and unscripted show like ‘The Offseason,’ which makes me think we’re already on the right track, All of the most successful reality TV shows feature women, and with Midge’s vision & these acclaimed producers’ execution, everyone is going to realize women’s sports was an obvious vehicle all along. Someone just had to be first,” Serena William's husband Alexis Ohanian said in a statement.

Speaking about the show, Alex Baskin said:

“Midge presented us with the exclusive opportunity to produce an original narrative around women’s sports framed around an offseason tradition she established with the NWSL. This was a story that needed to be told, and one that we think represents an entirely new lane of programming.”

The show premiered on October 18, 2024, and is exclusively available on X (formerly Twitter). Since its premiere, the first episode, which is 29 minutes long, has garnered over 18 million views.
