Despite Serena Williams being "super interested" in WNBA ownership, her husband Alexis Ohanian has explained why he won’t pursue it. In a recent appearance on the Best of Both Worlds podcast hosted by college basketball player Flau'jae Johnson, the Reddit co-founder revealed that his focus is on making women’s college basketball more viable.

He opened up about a conversation he had with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver years ago. Ohanian shared that he even tweeted a public request to the NCAA, offering to purchase the rights to women’s college basketball.

Reflecting on the NCAA's poor treatment of women’s sports, he mentioned the infamous weight room controversy, saying:

"Ironically, the NCAA had been so under-investing in college women, remember the weight room fiasco, not being able to even say March Madness,"

He pointed out that despite the growing attention and revenue generated by women’s sports, the NCAA had failed to properly support the athletes. The 41-year-old further emphasized the economic realities of women’s sports in the U.S., noting:

"In this country, capitalism sort of trumps everything and so all the people in my replies who would say like, 'Oh no one cares about women’s sports,' you cannot make that argument now because the dollars don’t lie. And NIL made it so crystal clear that you all were so valuable and they just had been dropping the ball for a decade."

Ohanian has heavily invested in women's sports, co-owning Angel City FC, an NWSL club, and supporting various initiatives like The Offseason, a show highlighting NWSL players, and Athlos, a women-only track event.
