Serena Williams' husband and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, publicly supported billionaire investor Chris Sacca's criticism of environmentalists and regulatory frameworks for escalating wildfire threats in Los Angeles.
California has been grappling with different devastating wildfires for years. Recent infernos such as the Palisades and Eaton Fires have caused immense damage, displacing thousands of residents and claiming lives. Climate change, coupled with outdated policies, has intensified the need for proactive wildfire management and preventive measures.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post on January 23, 2025, American investor and entrepreneur Tim Ferris shared a clip from his latest interview with Chris Sacca, where the latter blamed environmentalists and regulatory policies for hindering effective wildfire prevention measures.
Sacca argued that opposition to controlled burns and defensible spaces, as well as outdated construction methods, make communities more vulnerable to wildfires.
"If you really want to put some blame on some people about what happened in the LA fires, if we're really just playing the blame game, it's the f**king environmentalists. It's the f**king Sierra Club who makes it impossible for anyone to actually do any defensible space, to mow anything down, to do any controlled burns, to actually create defensible space around our f**king communities," Sacca said.
"They are expediting the rebuild of any houses in those areas that burned down, but you can't make any f**king changes to them. So we just saw a bunch of tinder boxes go up and it's a great opportunity to be like, hey, maybe we should build some different sh*t," he added.
Sacca, whose net worth is estimated to be $1.2 billion (as per Forbes), called for smarter solutions, such as fire-resistant materials, better landscaping, and updated urban planning, but feels these efforts are often blocked by current regulations and environmental lobbying.
"Maybe we shouldn't use the cheapest wood available, which is how Americans build sh*t. Maybe we should have more concrete, more aluminum, more heat reflection, more concrete walls around stuff. Maybe, just f**king maybe," he said.
"Maybe we should use more shrubbery around it that actually absorbs more water and is less flammable. But no, we shouldn't. No, expedited permitting if you build the exact same f**king thing you just had. Otherwise, you go back to the end of the line. It's just so funny to be a climate investor and find myself constantly at odds with the goddamn environmentalists," he added.
Alexis Ohanian reshared Sacca's interview clip, amplifying the latter's message.
"Let em know, Chris," Serena Williams' husband wrote.
