Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian penned a heartfelt note as a tribute to Washington Commanders legend late Sean Taylor ahead of the team's first NFL championship game in 20 years scheduled on Sunday, January 26. They will clash with the Philadelphia Eagles tomorrow to keep their Super Bowl hope alive.
Ohanian took to X (formerly Twitter) on January 25 in support of the Washington Commanders and wrote a few words in remembrance of their former Jersey No. 21 bearer Sean Taylor, who was shot by an intruder in his home in 2007.
In his note, Ohanian imagined what Taylor's achievements might have been and reminisced watching the Commander's iconic win with Taylor over Philadephia Eagles in the 2005 season finale from his mother's hospital room.
"If you need me between now and Sunday 3pm Eastern; I'll be watching this on repeat. #RIP21 you'd likely be retired now, after a career full of accolades, first-ballot Hall of Fame.... Maybe a coach? We'll never know. But we'll all feel you in Philly. I watched this with my dad from my mom's hospital room; I'd snuck in a 6 pack and we screamed as you dove over the goal line. Anybody. Anywhere. Anytime. @Commanders," wrote Serena Williams' husband.
The Washington Commanders edged out Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in the wild card round. They next ousted top-seed Detroit Lions 45-31 on January 19 to earn a spot in the 2025 NFL playoffs for the first time since 1991.
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian launched fellowship program in memory of his mother in 2022
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian lost his mother Anke Ohanian in 2005. She suffered from Glioblastoma, an incurable brain cancer, and passed away at the age of 54.
In 2022, Ohanian chose the day of her death anniversary to launch the 776 Fellowship Program through his foundation. He honored his mother's memory by pledging $20 million at the time towards helping young people fight climate change.
"I'm tired of this day being a sad day for me and our family, so I'm launching the @776foundation (mission: fight inequity worldwide) so we can always remember Mar 15 as the day I began a legacy of good work to honor her," Serena Williams' husband wrote in May 2022.
The foundation currently gives grants of up to $100,000 to its fellows and lends its support through the 776 network.
