Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, has made a confident prediction about the emergence of a billion-dollar women's sports franchise. The Reddit co-founder himself is a passionate advocate for the promotion of women's sports, backing his words with several significant investments in the sphere.
Ohanian has played a major role in supporting women's sports, leading the investment in the NWSL team Angel City FC, founding the innovative women-only track and field event Athlos, and giving away the largest donation in history to the University of Virginia's women's basketball team.
Furthermore, the 41-year-old co-produced 'The Offseason,' a docuseries that followed the lives of 11 NWSL players, and launched the 'InnerCircle: Athletes First' social media app that pledged to protect players from hate and harassment.
Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, recently made an appearance at Sportico's Women's Sports Panel, where he was asked whether a billion-dollar women's sports franchise would emerge within the next five years. The Reddit co-founder responded with a confident affirmation.
"Women's sports - billion dollar franchise, next five years, you think?"
"Yes, for sure," Ohanian responded.
Ohanian also reaffirmed his belief as he reshared the clip of the interaction on social media.
"As I said at the @sportico Business of Women’s Sports Panel, there will be a $B women’s sports franchise by 2030. Mark my words!" he captioned his Instagram post.
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian could play a pivotal role in making the Reddit co-founder's prediction a reality, as their co-owned Angel City FC became the highest-valued women's sports team earlier this year, with a $250 million valuation.
"It’s thanks to my wife Serena Williams, Billie Jean King & others who have been shining a light on women in sports for decades that we’ve come so far" - Alexis Ohanian
Earlier this year, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian were honored as a 'sports power couple' by the Los Angeles Times. The Reddit co-founder expressed his gratitude for the recognition, expressing his pride in their major impact on women's sports.
Ohanian also credited the 23-time Grand Slam champion, her fellow tennis legend Billie Jean King, soccer star Alex Morgan, and others as trailblazers, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the growth of women's sports.
"Thank you Los Angeles Times! The impact that we’ve been able to have in women’s sports is huge. I’m so proud of that. But the truth is that the wave was already there...," Ohanian posted on X.
"I just grabbed a board. It’s thanks to my wife (obviously), Billie Jean King, Alex Morgan + others who have been shining a light on women in sports for decades that we’ve come so far and been able to accomplish so much," he added.
Serena Williams' Alexis Ohanian has also candidly admitted that he wasn't a fan of women's sports back in 2019 until he came to appreciate the "compelling, exciting, and exhilarating" nature of women's tennis.
