Serena Williams' husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian expressed his admiration for a series of rare Pokemon trading cards signed by Takumi Akabane, one of the masterminds behind the Pokemon Trading Card Game series. Ohanian emphasized the significant cultural value of these collectibles.
On January 5, 2025, the trading card marketplace ALT shared an Instagram post that caught Ohanian's attention. The post featured a series of rare Pokemon trading cards, each signed by Takumi Akabane, the co-creator of the Pokemon Trading Card Game series.
These cards, graded CGC Auto 10, were described as a remarkable addition to any collector's portfolio.
"These signed cards come from the creator of Pokemon. These Japanese Pokemon Playtest and Presentation cards are a CGC Pedigree Collection from Takumi Akabane, the creator of Pokemon. The signatures are witnessed by CGC and authenticated by JSA. These historical Pokemon cards end Thursday on Alt," the caption read.
Ohanian promptly shared the post on his Instagram story with a caption:
"Art history right here."
Ohanian's passion for collecting memorabilia is no secret. His dedication extends beyond Pokemon to encompass a vast range of sports trading cards, including basketball, boxing, and racing.
However, Ohanian's most notable collection is undoubtedly his extensive array of Serena Williams trading cards, boasting over 4,500 pieces valued at approximately $2.5 million.
Alexis Ohanian opens up about what inspired his massive Serena Williams card collection
Alexis Ohanian partnered with the trading card marketplace ALT to showcase his impressive collection of more than 4,500 Serena Williams trading cards in November 2024.
The 41-year-old shared that he built this collection to provide future generations of his family with a lasting, physical link to the tennis icon's legacy.
"The whole plan for this is that like grandkids, great grandkids, they'll have this collection and probably hundred years from now, museums will want to put pieces of this up for the public display. But I don't want our grandkids to ever have to go to museums to see someone else's possession. They should be the ones renting it out. So that's why we got the greatest collection of all time for you [Serena Williams]," Ohanian said.
In early 2024, Ohanian took viewers on a tour of his "most treasured collectibles," including Serena Williams' rookie card and a real-life Iron Man sculpture.
