Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian criticized former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder for his 2009 ban on carrying flags in the stadium. Snyder sold the team in 2023 after a series of scandals unfolded including cases of sexual harassment.
Ohanian reminded the fans of Snyder's 2009 ban when the former owner banned all signs in FedExField and said he had done so because of his fragile ego. Terming the incident a 'sad' one, the tech mogul wrote on X:
"Remember when Dan Snyder banned @Commanders fans from bringing ANY type of sign into the arena because his ego was so fragile? Sad."
Snyder, who headed a tumultuous period from 1999, sold the team in April 2023 to a new ownership group headlined by 76ers and Devils owner Josh Harris and NBA legend Magic Johnson. Following his departure, Commanders have turned around their fortunes in the field, particularly in the ongoing season.
The Reds notched their first playoff win in nearly two decades last week against Tempa Bay Buccaneers before delivering a crushing loss to Detroit Lions on Sunday to head for their first Championship game in 33 years. Ohanian, a lifelong Commanders fan, is happy his daughters, Olympia and Adria, will know the team as a 'functional one'.
"The best part is my kids will only know this team as a functional organization breaking the generational curse," he wrote on X following Commanders 45-31 win over Lions
Ohanian, who also owns NWSL's Angel City FC, credited the Commander's new ownership for lifting the 'generational curse' from the team.
"What a difference new ownership makes." - Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian after Commanders reach first Championship Game in 33 years
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian was over the moon after the Washington Commanders upset the Detroit Lions in the NFL Divisional Round on Sunday. It marked the Commanders' second playoff win of the season after not having won a single since 2005, and they will now make their first appearance in the Championship game since the 1991 season.
"This team is amazing. What a difference new ownership makes," Alexis Ohanian wrote on X
Earlier after the Commanders' win over Tempa Bay Buccaneers, the Seven Seven Six owner said he would remember and savior the victory for a long time.
"A generational curse is lifted. Hail. @Commanders. I’m gonna remember this one for a long time," Ohanian said
After stunning the top-seeded Lions, Commanders will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game on January 27.
