Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian reveals his best investment that netted him over $17 million in profit

Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian has shed light on the most rewarding investment of his career. The Reddit co-founder and entrepreneur, who has made several notable investments over the years, also disclosed the impressive return he earned on the asset.

Ohanian began his investment journey by co-founding Initialized Capital in 2010, where he served as the managing partner until 2020. During his tenure, the firm backed several noteworthy startups like Cruise, Zenefits, Opendoor, and Instacart. Subsequently, the 41-year-old launched his own venture capital firm, 776, and took an interest in investing in women's sports.

The Reddit co-founder became the major investor in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team Angel City FC, which he co-owns with Serena Williams and their elder daughter Olympia, as well as Billie Jean King, Natalie Portman, and Eva Longoria. Through 776, Ohanian also founded Athlos, a female-only track and field event that debuted in September, and co-produced 'The Offseason' docuseries, which offered a glimpse into the lives of 11 NWSL players.

Among all his diverse ventures, one investment stands above the rest. During a recent appearance on the 20VC podcast, Alexis Ohanian revealed that the single best investment he had ever made was participating in the pre-launch token sale of the cryptocurrency Ethereum.

"It would be Ethereum at the, I think it was the pre-token sale. The token sale for Ethereum. So the pre-launch token sale," Ohanian said.

With an initial investment of just $10,000, Ohanian disclosed that he had earned a staggering $17.1 million return.

"$17.1 million today's prices," he added. "$10,000."

Despite Alexis Ohanian's business acumen, he has credited his wife Serena Williams for steering him away from a potential misstep when naming his venture capital firm.

Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian initially intended to name his venture capital firm Olympia Capital in honor of their daughter Olympia. However, Ohanian disclosed that the former World No. 1 warned him against the decision, pointing out that a future sibling may feel jealous over being excluded.

Taking Williams' advice, the Reddit co-founder chose the name 776, paying homage to the year the first ancient Olympic Games were held in Greece.

"I didn’t name it Olympia Capital because my wife wisely pointed out that if we’d had another kid, spoiler we do have another kid, they would be jealous. Instead, thinking back to my ancient Greek history classes, 776 BCE was the year of the first ancient Olympic Games. The domain was available and I just went with 776," Ohanian said.

Serena Williams' advice proved wise, as the couple welcomed their younger daughter Adira River in August 2023. Ohanian promptly included the newborn in his business ventures, making Adira a part-owner of the Los Angeles Golf Club alongside himself, Williams, and Olympia, when she was just a month old.
