Following the inaugural match of the highly-anticipated TGL, Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, revealed the "crux" of why he invested in the venture. Ohanian emphasized that the casual yet insightful conversations between players make the TGL unique.

The TGL, founded in 2022 by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, alongside other entities, kicked off its inaugural match on Tuesday, January 7. The Bay Golf Club faced off against the New York Golf Club in what turned into a dominant performance by BGC. They took an early lead and maintained control throughout, securing a 9-2 victory.

Following the match, an X account highlighted key takeaways that showcased the league’s unique appeal. They wrote that the innovative match-play format encourages creativity and flair.

Further, players displayed genuine passion for each shot and the match’s outcome, a critical factor for TGL’s long-term success. A point that was later reiterated by Ohanian was that mic'd-up players provided engaging insights and authentic golf banter, adding to the entertainment.

Ohanian, co-owner of the Los Angeles Golf Club, a TGL franchise, reshared the post and added:

"The “listening to dudes - who happen to be the best in the world - playing golf, talking shit” is the crux of why I invested — it’s missing from every other form of golf. And loved seeing how much the guys cared. More of this."

The Los Angeles Golf Club participating in the TGL is co-owned by Serena Willimas, her husband Alexis Ohanian, their daughters Olympia and Adira, and her sister Venus Williams. While talking about the investment, Ohanian revealed his thought process behind it.

“We see tremendous opportunities to leverage technology to bring golf closer to its fans and to provide an immersive and interactive experience that will captivate both seasoned golf enthusiasts and new fan,” said Ohanian.

Ohanian also revealed that this was another "piece of legacy" he was building for his family.

“To wit, my wife Serena Williams and I have enjoyed as Olympia’s taken a liking to golf. This is another piece of the legacy I’m building for my family and I hope this team can become a part of many families’ lives, too,” Ohanian said, via TGLGolf.com.

LAGC is scheduled to make its debut against Tiger Woods' Jupiter Links on January 14.
