Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian recently revealed that he's donated more than a million dollars to the University of Virginia women's basketball program. The revelation comes a couple of weeks after the news of Ohanian's gift broke out.
Married to the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Ohanian has been a vocal advocate for women's sports. He has invested in Angel City FC—a football team actively competing in the National Women's Soccer League.
The Reddit co-founder graduated from the University of Virginia in 2005. On December 12, 2024, he and the institute announced his initiative.
"It's probably the question I get the most often these days - When are you going to make moves in women's basketball? I am proud to support the women's program at my alma mater with this donation. It's time to bring the nation's best hoops talent to Charlottesville and win some championships in the next four years," Serena Williams' husband said during the announcement.
On Friday, Ohanian took to X and disclosed exciting details about his collaboration with the varsity. He mentioned that his donation would count in seven figures over the course of several years.
"I've talked about raising the volume on how excellent women's college basketball is for years now... But I've finally made an investment! Multiple years + seven figures — I'm thrilled to help in push forward women's basketball, starting with my stomping grounds: @UVAWomensHoops to make this team a championship contender in the next 4 years," Ohanian wrote.
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian: "My sights are set on NCAA Women's Basketball"
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian recently appeared on Flau'jae's podcast 'Best of Both Worlds'. During the conversation, he expressed regret at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's stance on women's basketball, suggesting the NCAA hasn't been making adequate investments.
After the interview aired, Ohanian took to X and declared his intentions to further inroads into the NCAA women's basketball scene. He wrote:
"Women's college basketball is up next, I'll tell you that right now. @Flaujae asked if I'd considered investing in the WNBA, but my sights are set on NCAA Women's Basketball.
"It's not just talk – look no further than my recent announcement that my first big investment into the space will be with a multi-year commitment to @UVAWomensHoops"
Interestingly, Ohanian is keen on making a mark in women's track and field events as well. Earlier this year, he organized a record prize money competition for the females in track and field through his venture called Athlos.
