Serena Williams' husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian continues to make significant strides in supporting women's sports. Recently, he showcased his latest stylish purchase promoting female athletes at the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
From leading the charge as the main investor in Angel City FC, a National Women's Soccer League franchise, in 2020 to founding the 776 Foundation to support marginalized communities in 2022, Ohanian's commitment to women's sports has been nothing short of inspiring.
Earlier this year, he sold his stake in Angel City to Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, for a staggering $250 million. This move allowed him to redirect his focus to other ventures, such as 'Athlos,' a professional, female-only track and field meeting series that debuted in September 2024 in New York City.
On December 17, 2024, Ohanian took to X (formerly Twitter) to unveil his latest acquisition---a stylish black vintage WNBA '96 hoodie from Playa Society, a black-women-owned sports-inspired streetwear brand.
The plush hoodie is a nod to the origins of the WNBA, featuring the "WNBA" arc wordmark, "EST. 96," and logos from the league. The back of the hoodie proudly displays hand-drawn lettering that reads "Women's National Basketball Association," celebrating the league’s inception in 1996.
"MAIL DAY. @WNBA @Playa_Society," Alexis Ohanian wrote.
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian makes the biggest donation to the UVA women’s basketball team
Alexis Ohanian, an alumnus of the University of Virginia, recently made a significant donation to the UVA women’s basketball program.
A graduate of the Class of 2005, Ohanian partnered with the Virginia Athletics Foundation and Virginia Athletics to announce the historic contribution on Thursday, December 12. While the precise figure remains undisclosed, the donation stands as the largest in the program's history.
"It's probably the question I get the most often these days - When are you going to make moves in women's basketball? I am proud to support the women's program at my alma meter with this donation. It's time to bring the nation's best hoops talent to Charlottesville and win some championships in the next four years," Alexis Ohanian told ESPN.
Ohanian recently congratulated Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark on achieving the TIME magazine's 'Athlete of the Year' honor.
