Serena Williams' husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has called for the resetting of political strategy for the Democratic Party after it lost the 2024 US presidential election to the Republican Party's Donald Trump. Harris lost in a tight race to Trump as the latter secured his second term in the White House.
Harris trailed from the start when voting started on November 6 but was leading in the traditional Democrat-supporting states such as New York and California. However, she lost key swing states like Georgia and North Carolina.
Trump led from the start, both in traditional Republican bases and most of the swing states. He crossed the required 270 electoral votes, and has been declared the winner of the election.
Ohanian cast his vote earlier on Friday, November 1, and was seemingly supporting the Democrats. Following the Democrats' loss on Wednesday, Ohanian shared a graphic showing that Trump had gained the vote share in all but two states compared to previous elections. The Reddit co-founder urged the party to reset its strategy in order to win the next election.
"Dems — time to hit reset + regroup," he wrote
He also advised the party to appeal to the American people from first principles.
"Build back a platform and strategy to appeal to Americans from first principles," he wrote.
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian taught the importance of voting to his daughter Olympia
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian welcomed their first child, daughter Olympia, in September 2017, a few months before tying the knot. Now 7, she learned the importance of voting from her father during the US presidential election.
After Ohanian cast his vote on November 1, he revealed in a post on Instagram that his daughter Olympia had asked him about the importance of voting.
"Olympia's big question last night was about voting and I explained what a miraculous (YOUNG) experiment our republic is in the timeline of humanity (and we didn't get it perfect from the start but we are always working to improve it - like fighting to make sure girls -- especially Black girls like her -- could vote) and how RARE a society with prolonged free and fair elections AND peaceful transitions of power is. Do not take these for granted," he wrote
While Ohanian is a firm believer in elections, Williams does not get involved in politics due to her religious beliefs.
