Serena Williams responded to her 'haters', who had accused the American of bleaching her skin. Williams clarified that she didn't partake in the activity and also quipped about sunlight's role in how one's skin looked.
Williams, who is one of the most prolific tennis players of all time, has suffered a lot of racism throughout her career as a result of her skin color. However, she has always expressed how she loved being a black woman.
In a recent Instagram live session, the American, while applying WYN beauty foundation, which is her makeup line, sent a fitting response to her haters, who accused her of bleaching her skin after a video of the 23-time Major helping her daughter during a stage play went viral.
“Then I put just that neutral colour, that is actually my skin colour, and no, for you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin. There is a thing called sunlight, and in that sunlight, you get different colours,” she said.
“Yes, I’m calling you out on this because it is ridiculous,” she said. “Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, she bleached her skin.’ I’m a dark, black woman, and I love who I am, and I love how I look.”
Serena Williams added how she didn't judge others for lightening their skin with makeup but wanted to clarify that she didn't partake in the activity.
“If people do it, that’s their thing, and they have every opportunity and they should. I don’t judge, but you guys do,” she said. “But that’s what this world is about, and I stay in my lane — the non-judgy one and I keep it. But no, I actually don’t bleach my skin, so can we just kinda clear that up?” she added.
"Shouldn't have let it become a norm" - When Serena Williams opened up about how she found 'solace' in God to deal with racism
During an interview with SkySports in 2020, Serena Williams highlighted how she had to struggle with racism all her life.
"It is really unfortunate, but it's something I think that, systematically, we just have to ultimately deal with, and I shouldn't have let it become a norm," she said.
Williams mentioned how God and the Bible helped her in finding solace even in the hardest of times.
"I, personally, am very God-fearing and I believe in the Bible, and the one way that we can have peace and security is through God, so I've taken solace in that, but it's sad that someone on my level has had to accept so many different things because of the colour of my skin."
Not only Serena but her sister Venus Williams also has been a victim of racism for a majority of their lives.
