Rick Macci, the former coach of Venus and Serena Williams, praised their father, Richard, for his dedication to training his daughters. As their first coach, Richard played a very important role in their success, serving as the foundation of their incredible journey.
Williams began coaching Venus and Serena when they were just four and a half years old, taking them to public tennis courts for practice. He also created a detailed 85-page plan to guide their training and development.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), shared on Thursday, December 6, Rick Macci praised Richard Williams for his consistency in shaping the "little Williams" into the champions they are today. He also touched on Richard's unique way of imparting life lessons.
The veteran coach wrote:
“Richard was the most consistent guy ever.. Daily you knew what you were getting. He was always happy mad joking and poking. He was locked loaded and launching life lessons to the little warriors and his words were gold and it helped them win gold. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams”
Macci, founder of the Rick Macci International Tennis Academy in Florida in 1985, took over from Richard in 1991 and mentored the Williams sisters till 1995.
"Richard treated Venus & Serena Williams as kids first & tennis players second" - Rick Macci
On November 8, Rick Macci shared a post on X, calling Richard Williams the funniest person he’s ever met. He admired Richard’s playful nature and how he always made jokes to keep things light.
Macci also talked about how Richard treated Venus and Serena like kids, fully aware of the immense pressure on their shoulders, and used humor to lighten their stress and lift their spirits.
“Richard is the funniest guy I ever met. Every day joking around. Every day made his girls laugh. Guy understood pressure and what was on the horizon. He always treated them as kids first and tennis players second so someday both could be first. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams.”
The American jokingly posted on another X post on November 17, saying Richard always made his girls carry their own bags and bottles. He’d remind them that if he carried them, they’d belong to him instead.
“Both girls everyday carried there own Bags and Water. Richard the Compton Comedian would say that is YOUR BAG and that is YOUR WATER and if I carry it is MY Bag and MY WATER and I will sell it and drink it. Love this guy. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams.”
