Serena Williams' former coach Rick Macci recently recalled a funny conversation he had with the 23-time Major winner's father, Richard Williams. Macci claimed that Williams Sr. was "the funniest and the most honest guy he had ever met".
Richard Williams is renowned for coaching the Williams sisters in their early years. The American's impact has been well documented in the Academy Award-nominated film King Richard, which is based on their rise to the top echelons of tennis.
Rick Macci, on his part, trained the Williams sisters at his academy in Boca Raton, Florida, for a short period of time in the early 1990s. On Sunday (December 22), he took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share a funny anecdote from Serena Williams' father Richard, where he described his entire family. He wrote:
"Richard Williams is the funniest and most honest guy I ever met. He said from day one. Venus throws her entire body at the ball. Serena throws her beads at the balls. The wife throws a good meal every night. Every day I just throw a tantrum! @Venuseswilliamsn @serenawilliams."
Macci is a USPTA-certified coach and has trained several Major winners: Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jennifer Capriati, and Andy Roddick.
Serena Williams' ex-coach Rick Macci: "Richard was always early to practice, life lessons by the Compton Crusader"
Last week, Rick Macci also heaped praise on the Williams sisters' father Richard Williams for his discipline in an X (formerly Twitter) post. He wrote:
"Richard was was always Early to practice. Always. We said if you are Late you will never be Great. Both VEE and Meek on court not only prepared Early but very seldom hit Late. Life lessons by the Compton Crusader,” Rick Macci wrote.
Macci briefly analyzed Richard Williams' coaching methods in a separate post. According to him, the latter always emphasized good footwork during training drills.
"Every day Richard would say your FEETS FEETS FEETS. Speed is Money. Kept coaches hitters media and the girls off balance. Unreal method to his madness. Wanted Everybody on there TOES especially Venus and Serena. Love this guy. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams," Macci posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Richard Williams had a huge influence in shaping Serena Williams and Venus Williams' respective singles careers. The two won 30 Major singles titles overall while achieving several other accolades, including being in the top two of the highest career prize money leaders in WTA history.
