Serena Williams and Venus Williams' childhood coach Rick Macci recently shared fascinating insights into their father Richard Williams and his unique coaching techniques. Richard was the first coach for the Williams sisters.
The Williams family moved from Compton, California to West Palm Beach, Florida, so that Serena and Venus could train under Macci's guidance. Venus and Serena Williams were ten and nine respectively when they began training with Macci in 1991. They continued to train under him until 1995, when their father, Richard, assumed the role of their full-time coach.
Recently, Rick Macci took to social media and recounted some memorable anecdotes about Richard Williams. He revealed that while training Richard would focus on the speed of Venus and Serena's footwork as he believed that "speed is money."
The 70-year-old recalled that Richard insisted on keeping the sisters constantly on their "toes." He described the 82-year-old's coaching style as effective but with a methodical approach that seemed almost eccentric but undeniably successful.
“Every day Richard would say your FEETS FEETS FEETS. Speed is Money. Kept coaches hitters media and the girls off balance. Unreal method to his madness. Wanted Everybody on there TOES especially Venus and Serena. Love this guy. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams," Macci posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Rick Macci also revealed that Richard Williams was always looking for better and better performances from his daughters.
“When Venus and Serena would hit it out to Hard, Richard would say hit it Harder. Whoa! The moral to that story is simple. Believing is magic. Fear is crippling. Greatness starts on the inside. Compton Street Smart Beyond Epic. @Venuseswilliams @serenawilliams," Macci added.
In addition to mentoring Venus and Serena Williams, Rick Macci has also worked with other top tennis players, including Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Jennifer Capriati, Sofia Kenin, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands among others.
