Novak Djokovic's match against arch-rival Rafael Nadal in the second round at the 2024 Paris Olympics brought out tennis and music stars. Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, and Snoop Dogg were all in attendance at Philippe Chatrier for the 60th meeting between the legendary duo.
Serena Williams touched down in Paris ahead of the opening ceremony as she was one of the four athletes who carried the Olympic Cauldro on a boat to Amelie Mauresmo, before she carried it further. She extended her stay in the French capital and watched the battle between the rivals.
Billie Jean King was also in attendance, seated alongside American rapper Snoop Dogg. Earlier, she performed a ritual called 'Les trois coups', which involves striking a baton on the ground thrice to signal the start of a performance before Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz's doubles match.
Interestingly, Snoop Dogg wore a special t-shirt dedicated to American tennis star Coco Gauff. Gauff was surprised by the rapper's fashion choice and showed her disbelief on her Instagram stories.
Djokovic defeated Nadal 6-1, 6-4 to continue his charge towards the elusive Olympics gold medal. The Serb completely overpowered Nadal in the first set as he won the first five games before the Spaniard got one back. The World No. 2 won the next game to clinch the set.
In the second set, the Serb again raced to a 4-0 lead before Nadal won four games in a row. But he got his serve broken in the next game and the 24-time Grand Slam champion served out the match.
Novak Djokovic: "You can't give Rafael Nadal any chances"
Novak Djokovic spoke to Eurosport about the match against Rafael Nadal and heaped praise on Nadal's ability to force his back into the match from any situation. The Serb added that he got too comfortable when he went 4-0 up in the second set.
"I'm very relieved because everything seemed to be going my way at 6-1 and 4-0, maybe I felt too comfortable at that moment. At 4-1 I played a regular serve. You can't give Nadal any chances because he'll take them, he'll get back into the match, especially on this court with the crowd involved," he said.
The World No. 2 emphasized the importance of the ninth game of the second set in shifting the momentum back in his favor.
"It was very tough, the crucial game at 4-4, the last game with used balls and trying to break his serve and then serve with new balls. I did well on my last two serves, but it was a very, very close match, especially in the second set. I'm very happy with the level at which I played," he added.
Novak Djokovic will now face Dominik Koepfer in the third round at the Paris Olympics.
