Several tennis fans have expressed disappointment after seeing a massive hike in ticket prices for the Wimbledon 2024 men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The blockbuster clash is set to take place on Sunday, July 14.
Carlos Alcaraz has showcased solid tennis while defending his title, despite an early second-round exit at the Queen's Club Championships. The 21-year-old convincingly defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (10), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals.
Meanwhile, Djokovic, despite undergoing a knee surgery just weeks before Wimbledon, maintained his momentum and reached the final by comprehensively defeating Lorenzo Musetti.
However, before this riveting encounter, an update concerning the ticket prices left most tennis fans startled online. The minimum ticket price for the center court entry stood at $10,600 on TickPick, making it the most expensive ticket for any sporting event in the history of the booking app.
One fan expressed that the match was not worth paying such a hefty amount, speculating that Djokovic would lose in straight sets.
"A shame for those who’re paying 10k just to see Novak lose in 3 straight sets," the fan said.
A fan compared the prices to those of Emma Raducanu's 2021 US Open final, calling the latter's ticket costs a "steal".
"No thanks! My finals ticket to @EmmaRaducanu @usopen championship match was a steal at $120. Worth every penny!" The fan wrote.
"The tickets at @Wimbledon have always been inaccessible to sports fans. This is why I like the other grand slams which are more reasonable," a fan commented.
Here are a few more fan reactions to the ticket prices for the Wimbledon men's singles final.
"Meaning that rich pompous golf fanatics who tend to be Fedfans and anti-Novak will populate the stands. Perfect," a Novak Djokovic fan wrote.
"And anyone willing to pay that should reevaluate their life decision-making," a fan chimed in.
"Makes sense because of the limited amount of seats. However this is still insane," another said.
While Carlos Alcaraz aims to defend his title and complete the Channel Slam (winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year), Djokovic will look to win his 8th Wimbledon title, which would also mark his 25th Grand Slam title.
Novak Djokovic anticipating "huge battle" against Carlos Alcaraz in Wimbledon final
Following his convincing win over Lorenzo Musetti, Novak Djokovic lauded Carlos Alcaraz, saying he will win a lot more trophies in the future, but hoped he doesn't win the summit clash at Wimbledon 2024.
"We’re gonna see a lot of him in the future, no doubt. He’s gonna win many more Grand Slams. Hopefully in two days, not this one. But in the future.. when I retire in about 15 years," Djokovic said during his on-court interview.
The Serb reflected on last year's Wimbledon final clash, emphasizing that he will need to give his all to defeat Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.
"Jokes aside.. he already beat me in the final here last year in 5 sets. I don’t expect anything less than that. A huge battle on court. He’s complete of a player as they come. It’s gonna take the best of my abilities overall to beat him on Sunday," he added.
Despite a stellar season last year Novak Djokovic hasn't enjoyed a similar run of form in 2024 the same in 2024 and will look to end his trophy drought at the grass-court major. The Serb also holds a narrow 3-2 lead in the head-to-head against Alcaraz, winning their most recent encounter at the Nitto ATP Finals.
