The season's penultimate Masters 1000 tournament, the Shanghai Masters, will take place from October 2-13. A new champion will be crowned this year following defending champion Hubert Hurkacz's withdrawal due to an injury.
Jannik Sinner leads the field as the top seed. He has already claimed two Masters 1000 titles this season and will aim to add another one to his list. Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev round out the top five seeds.
With the tour's leading names set to dazzle in China over the next few days, here's a quick look at all the relevant details regarding the Shanghai Masters:
What is the Shanghai Masters?
It is one of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour and is the only one to be played in Asia. The tournament wasn't held from 2020 until 2022 due to the pandemic and only got the go-ahead to resume its operations once again last year.
The tournament previously featured a 56-player draw but that changed with the expansion to a 96-player draw last year. Novak Djokovic holds the record for most titles here with four, followed by Andy Murray with three.
Venue
The Shanghai Masters will be held at the Qinhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China.
Draw and Players
All 32 seeded players have received a first-round bye. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have landed in the same half of the draw and could meet in the semifinals. The former will begin his campaign against Taro Daniel or a qualifier, while the latter will start against either Shang Juncheng or Coleman Wong.
Before bumping into Alcaraz, Sinner could meet Ben Shelton in the fourth round. He lost to the American at this stage here last year. He could cross paths with familiar rival Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.
Alcaraz has the likes of Marin Cilic and Gael Monfils in his section and could face Tommy Paul or Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic headline the bottom half of the Shanghai Masters draw.
Zverev has a potential date with Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. The former has lost his last three matches against the latter. Djokovic, meanwhile, could face his old rival Stan Wawrinka in the third round, with a possible fourth-round showdown against Frances Tiafoe on the cards. Either Grigor Dimitrov or Andrey Rublev could await Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
