Tennis fans are divided on Iga Swiatek not speaking about the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria or the WTA's earthquake relief.

The sport's governing bodies and the four Grand Slams have all united to launch Tennis Plays for Love, an initiative that will raise funds to support the earthquake victims.

Iga Swiatek started her title defense at the Qatar Open with a crushing 6-0, 6-1 win over Danielle Collins. The Pole never mentioned the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria or the campaign launched by the tennis bodies, something which has drawn a mixed reaction from tennis fans.

One fan claimed that Iga Swiatek pretended that the relief campaign launched by the tennis organizations did not exist.

"I mean yeah world doesn't revolve around us or whatever but I expected her to mention about wta earthquake relief as world no1:/// but she pretends like it doesn't exist," the fan's tweet read.

One fan expressed her disappointment at Iga Swiatek's silence regarding the earthquakes and claimed that the Pole should've said something right after the tragedies occurred.

"I’m actually really disappointed w Iga being silent about Turkey and I’m not sure how to explain that. I feel like she should have said sth right after it happened and now it’s too late," the fan's tweet read.

Another fan claimed that it was sad to see Swiatek not speaking about the earthquakes given how vocal she was in promoting Ukraine's cause during their conflict with Russia.

"It's sad because she is very active in promoting Ukraine's cause. Of course, I'm not saying Ukraine is not important, but when you see more than 35.000 civilians losing their lives in a single incident, if you truly believe in humanity, shouldn't it be your concern too?" the fan's tweet read.

However, there were a few fans who defended Swiatek, with one fan claiming that while the World No. 1 was silent about the earthquakes, she could still be emotionally affected by the situation.

"At this point, you want every other player to mention about it? I'm sure she is very sad and devasted about it but dont put such a pressure on her," the fan's tweet read.

Another fan posted a screenshot of Swiatek's Instagram story where she shared an image of the Tennis Plays for Love campaign and said that the Pole probably made a donation.

"I know this is not much but I’m sure she is thinking about it and probably made a donation too cause she’s a really good person," the fan's tweet read.

Iga Swiatek was scheduled to play Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open. However, the Swiss withdrew from the match just hours after defeating Victoria Azarenka.

The Pole thus sealed a place in the semi-finals of the WTA 500 event and will face either fourth seed Coco Gauff or Veronika Kudermetova. She is yet to suffer a defeat against either player and will be heavily favored to book a place in the final.

Swiatek is yet to win a title in 2023 but has a 7-2 record.
