Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian says that the 23-time Grand Slam champion is his “ride or die”.
The couple met in May 2015 in Rome and got engaged in 2016. They had their daughter, Olympia Ohanian, in 2017 and got married later that year.
In an interview on CBS Mornings, Williams spoke about her retirement plans, her business ventures and how she was enjoying her family life. Ohanian joined the interview for a brief moment to talk about his wife and give a tour of their farm in Florida.
When the interviewer, Gayle King, asked the couple how they worked so well together, Ohanian waxed lyrical about Williams and said:
“I knew I had met someone that I was never going to outgrow and more importantly I knew I had met someone who was always going to explicitly, believe me sometimes or implicitly challenge me to be better. She’s a ride or die and you all don’t see a lot of it because thankfully it'll do my work in public.”
Williams and Reddit co-founder Ohanian's first meeting in 2015 was a mere coincidence. She was the one who asked him out on a date, after which he saw the former World No.1 in action at the 2015 French Open.
When Ohanian met the tennis superstar, he was not a tennis fan and had never watched a single match. Since meeting her, he has always been spotted in the crowd supporting his wife.
Serena Williams has been baptized as a Jehovah's Witness
Serena Williams has never been very open about her religious beliefs. After her retirement, however, she revealed that she was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Prior to the 2018 US Open, she revealed that she won’t be celebrating her daughter Olympia Williams' first birthday because she was a Jehovah's Witness and they do not believe in celebrations as 'it displeases God.'
“We’re Jehovah's Witnesses, so we don’t do that,” the former World No.1 had said at the 2018 US Open press conference.
Williams has also said that while her husband Alexis Ohanian had not grown up within the church community, he supported her in everything she believed in.
“Alexis didn’t grow up going to any church, but he’s really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first,” she said.
On January 8 this year, Serena Williams was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The baptism took place at the Jehovah's Witness Assembly in West Palm Beach, Florida.
