Nick Kyrgios lashed out at a fan, who criticized the Aussie's comments on Jannik Sinner's doping saga. The Aussie has been expressing his dismay at Sinner's verdict, stating that the Italian and his team have been let off easily, even though he deserves suspension.
Sinner was involved in a huge controversy that sent shockwaves throughout the tennis world. The World No. 1 had tested positive for Clostebol, a banned drug, during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this year. However, he argued that the substance had accidentally entered his body following which an investigation took place.
The ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) cleared the Italian to play as they believed his story, in which he said that the substance entered his body via bare-handed massages from his ex-physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi. Naldi used a healing spray, which contained Clostebol, for a cut on his finger.
Many players from the tennis world felt that the verdict was unfair to other players, who were treated much harsher in similar situations. Among them, was Nick Kyrgios, who called for a two-year suspension on Sinner. Since then, Kyrgios has been incessantly commenting on the doping saga and opposing the ITIA's verdict, which has irked fans.
One fan took to X (formerly Twitter) and criticized the 29-year-old over his comments on ESPN.
"Kyrgios just chatting sh*t on ESPN comms as per usual. So uneducated on the Sinner situation," the fan said.
Nick Kyrgios lashed out at the fan telling them that he has been hired for three consecutive Majors leading up to the US Open and said that they would have to deal with his opinions for a long time to come.
"That’s why they’ve hired me for 3 straight grandslams - and to tell you the truth, you will deal with me and my opinions for a long time my friend. So sit back with your hands in your pants and try to tell yourself I don’t know anything 🫣 donut," Kyrgios responded.
“I’m not going to be as hospitable to Jannik Sinner as I was before" - Nick Kyrgios
While commentating the match opening round match between Dominic Thiem and Ben Shelton at the 2024 US Open, Nick Kyrgios said that he won't be as hospitable to Jannik Sinner as he was before.
“I’m not going to be as hospitable to him as I was before when I’m in the locker room,” Kyrgios said.
However, while discussing the Italian's case on ESPN, Kyrgios made it clear that he had nothing personal against Sinner and also said that he is one of the best players in the world, who is going to be very important for tennis in the future.
“It’s nothing against Sinner personally at all. I know how important he is. He’s one of the greatest tennis players we have right now.. and how important he’s gonna be for the next 15 years. I’m not denying any of that. Nothing against him personally."
Jannik Sinner, the top seed, will kick off his 2024 US Open campaign against Mackenzie McDonald. The Italian boasts a 3-0 lead against the American.
