Somdev Devvarman, Purav Raja drag AITA to court for allegedly violating Sports Code 

Former tennis stars Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja have dragged the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to court over allegedly violating a few provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011. Before the elections on Saturday, September 28, Devvarman and Raja filed a petition to the High Court in Delhi on Monday, September 23.

Rohit Rajpal, the captain of the Indian Davis Cup team in the World Group 1 tie against Sweden, and Chintan Parikh, are contesting for the top post. Dinesh Arora and Sunder Iyer are expected to be appointed treasurer and secretary general respectively.

Devvarman and Raja alleged that the AITA did not give seats to athletes in the executive committee and general assembly. Devvarman and Raja requested the High Court to ensure that the administrator is appointed to run the AITA and that the upcoming elections are conducted as per the Sports Code.

“It is submitted that it is essential that AITA, as well as its constituents, must comply with the Sports Code and the Ministry out to be directed to ensure that AITA and its constituents are fully compliant with the requirements of the Sports Code as a condition for continued recognition only thereafter fresh elections may be directed to be held in fair transparent and democratic manner,” the petition read via Indian Express.

AITA alleges Sumit Nagal for skipping Davis Cup

The AITA has been hogging the headlines of late after the tennis governing body also alleged Sumit Nagal, Sasikumar Mukund, and Yuki Bhambri for deliberately not taking part in the Davis Cup clash against Sweden.

The AITA said that Nagal had asked for $50,000 to play in Davis Cup matches for India. Nagal, in reply, said that athletes need to be compensated for their services to the country. India lost 4-0 to Sweden after N Sriram Balaji and Ramkumar Ramanathan faltered.
